Sedation options for nervous or anxious patients considering dental implants.
Dental phobia is very common and can happen for all sorts of reasons. It is nothing to be embarrassed about, and we can make what feels impossible not only possible but an experience that is actually pleasant. As difficult as this may be to believe, with our range of sedation options we can offer life-changing dental implants to even the most anxious clients.
What is Dental Implant Sedation?
Throughout your treatment with us, you are in the driver’s seat when it comes to making all decisions. That includes sedation. It’s important to us that you have the very best experience, and for our most nervous patients, sometimes sedation can help with that.
Dental implants can be placed using a combination of local anaesthetic, and IV sedation to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible for you. This is a personal choice and you will be guided by our team when deciding the best course of treatment for you.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
The intravenous sedation we offer reduces anxiety and ensures there is little recall of the procedure. A local anaesthetic is always given so that you will be numb in the area of surgery meaning this will be a stress and pain-free experience.
Intravenous dental implant sedation can be included in your personal treatment plan and will be administered by a hospital registered, highly experienced anaesthetist working alongside the dentist.
How Does IV Sedation Work?
Intravenous sedation is administered via a vein in the hand or arm and allows you to remain awake whilst in a state of deep relaxation.
Intravenous sedation does not make you unconscious, but it does have amnesic qualities, meaning you’ll remember very little of your time in the dental chair. This type of sedation usually takes a few hours to wear off, so please make sure to arrange a lift home as you will not be able to drive.
Is Dental Implant Sedation Safe?
Dental sedation is extremely safe when administered in the right setting by the right clinicians. We use hospital-grade monitoring and only use the safest drugs to ensure smooth and controlled sedation.
We will ask you for a detailed medical history to ensure we tailor the sedation to your exact needs. Very rarely, pre-existing medical conditions mean that we cannot offer sedation, but your safety is paramount and the team will discuss options with you.
If you are over the age of 18 and in good overall health, you are most likely a good candidate for implant sedation. We generally recommend some form of sedation in the following cases.
- Patients with any sort of phobia of the dentist
- Patients who require the removal of multiple teeth
- Complex or lengthy procedures, such as ‘All-on-4‘, Zygomatic Implants, or Bone Grafting
- Patients who suffer from painful medical conditions such as severe neck or back pain, or arthritis
- Patients with a sensitive gag reflex
If you are nervous about the prospect of requiring sedation but think it may help you undergo dental implant treatment with us, please do not hesitate to get in touch for a free phone consultation to ask any questions you may have. We are here for you.
